The North Highland Tourism Operators Ltd is part of the very successful North Highland Initiative, started by HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay. Launched in August 2005, The North Highland Initiative's main objective is to heighten the awareness of the North Highland area through its produce, tourism and the built environment in such a way as to strengthen the economy of the North Highlands.

Already, beef and lamb produce from the area, uniquely branded with Prince Charles name and Scottish Title and Standard, has exceeded expectations in the market place with well over £100,000 in additional income paid back to primary producer farmers because of the strength of the brand. A number of other local products are currently under consideration.

The North Highland Tourism Operators Ltd, the second element of HRH's North Highland Initiative, has already found success in the formation of one the largest tourism trade groups in the Highlands covering all types of accommodations providers from the biggest and best hotels to small bed and breakfast establishments, and includes self catering cottages and caravan sites. Visitor attraction owners and managers also form a large part of our membership. We are also pleased to accept applications from every type of retail and other businesses that could benefit from increasing tourism into our area.

" I can safely say that my presence on your website has helped my business considerably. I was twiddling my thumbs last winter until the John Lennon article appeared. I received an astronomical number of website hits which have remained consitently high ever since. The week after the article appeared my phone started ringing and has not stopped since. I believe that my presence on the website has been of significant benefit to me both in terms of direct business and in publicising my existence."

Over 130 businesses have joined from Caithness and Sutherland and we are pleased that businesses in Ross-shire have recognised the potential of being part of a large and professional trade organisation in the area. Work is currently underway to continue with the growth of the membership in all three Northern counties to continue to form a strong trade voice in the Highlands in our dealings with the Scottish Executive, VisitScotland, Highland Council and the Highlands and Islands Local Enterprise network.

The main aims of the Group are to:

  • Brand and market the North Highlands as a unique visitor experience within the Highlands of Scotland.
  • To continue our growth to establish the Group as the natural organisation of choice for professional tourism and associated businesses in the area.
  • To act on our members behalf to promote tourism to the North Highlands and thereby increase the economy of this important industry.
